Mr Matthew Solan

I graduated from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School in 1992 and completed surgical training in London, Guildford, Oxford and Dublin. My specialist orthopaedic surgery training was in the South Thames (West) Region. I was awarded a British Orthopaedic Association Travelling Fellowship to Dublin and have also worked overseas in South Africa and at the Universities of Johns Hopkins and Maryland, Baltimore, USA.

In 2003, I was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Frimley Park Hospital, and then moved to the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford, in 2006. I treat patients of all ages except infants.

My special interests are in arthroscopic surgery, forefoot surgery, rheumatoid arthritis, sports injuries and heel pain. I run a “One Stop” Clinic for Achilles tendon and plantar fasciitis problems.

I have published many scientific articles on foot and ankle surgery and maintain an active research interest. As part of the Cartiva Motion Study Group I have contributed to Award Winning research into new treatments for arthritis in the big toe. I am Visiting Professor at London South Bank University and Honorary Lecturer at the University of Surrey.

I have contributed to the Oxford Textbook of Orthopaedic Surgery as well as Bailey and Love’s Surgical Practice. I am a member of the editorial panel for the journal of the European Foot and Ankle Society and also for the Bone and Joint Journal.

I teach both nationally and internationally and am proud to be part of the Barouk Forefoot Surgery Faculty in Bordeaux and Zimmer Biomet Learning Centre. Closer to home, I run both the UK Forefoot Surgery Course and the Arthroscopy of the Ankle Course at the prestigious MATTU in Guildford’s Postgraduate Medical School.

I currently chair the British Foot and Ankle Surgery Society Scientific Committee.

As Program Director for Surgical Training in the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery I devote considerable energy to training the next generation of surgeons.
